Hi, just joined this forum as I was looking for a place to get some recommendations.

I'm keen on starting to get some experience with these devices, but not sure which models best suits my need. (Or in fact if these devices actually can do all I want them to do..) Any recommendations would be highly appreciated.

What i would like the device to do is;

* Turn my "dumb HD TV" into a "smart TV" (which I understand is the basic function all these devices do). Primary use: To be able to browse to TV and Film sites that stream content to my "PC" (i.e. to my TV)
* Work as a local "Media Player" on my LAN, i.e. streaming local media from my NAS (WD MyBookLive) to the TV. I.e. it should have support for "Twonky servers" and maybe also Microsoift Media servers etc. Basically I want to retire my old existing WD TV Live media Player.
* Allow me to "beam" media content from my Android phone and Android tablet (also from iOS devices would be great) to my TV. This could be any media like photos, music, local videos or online streaming media.
* Be very portable and mobile (which i understand the all are) so I can bring it while travelling and even connect it to hotel room TV set.

* Be able to stream a "mirror" of my Android Phone or Tablet screen to the TV. For example to be able to show powerpoint presentations or simply demonstrate a new Android App on a bigger screen.
* Have separate (Optical preferred) audio out to be able to connect audio directly to Home Theatre or other HiFi system.
* Built in HDMI switch (as the number of HDMI ports on most TV sets are very limited). Would be fantastic if at least one (preferably 2 or 3) other devices could be connected through this Android PC...
* micro SD or similar to be able to expand storage
* USB port for memory sticks or local HDD (I assume more or less standard on all)

I'm not into online gaming and that sort of applications so not concerned about whatever support required for that

I understand the better models comes with bluetooth in order to be able to attach a keyboard. Questions;
* Any recommendation for keyboard to use?
* May this bluetooth port also be used for streaming music..? I.e. could I "pair" my Android Phone to this device as a "external speaker" or "head set" and in that way stream music also over bluetooth to my TV or HiFi system...? (When open WiFi is not available...)

Really hoping for some great feedback including recommendation for which device best suit the above "specification". I'm looking forward to become a user... ;-)

Welcome aboard Anders, my interests in it's use pretty much is the same as yours. I have had 3 or 4 fantastic years of downloadig free media from pirate bay, torrentday, and extra In that period I have filled a 2.5Tb USB drive. I recentrly put everything on a 4Tb WD MyBookLive and set up my LAN everything works fine from my windows 7 machine, but not so good with the attached android machines. My original MK802 did'nt have enough horse power so I upgraded to a MK808 with roughly 3 times the performance. At one point yesterday I had my Nexus 10, Trio Stealth Pro (A10), windows 7 notebook, and my MK808 (set top box) all streaming movies smoothly at the same time via the attached 4Tb WD MyBookLive. I believe I was using MX player for the androids, and VLC player for the windows machine. It was impressive, and I should have streamed to my android phone also. Today I can't get a single android machine to run without buffering continuely causing jerkiness. The android ver of VLC player is very stripped down so I need to investigate it more. Bittorrent on the MK808 (the transfer app I use) creeps at less than 1KBs. On the windows machine it downloads over 200KBs on the same wifi network. I have to do some work on this since I have been able to keep my MK808 on the wifi with a good speed (out of the case, and aimed just right). I ordered a Zealz GK 802 quad A9 from ebay (china) for $64.99 USD, It should be here by the end of Feb. or not, they only had 48 feedbacks. There are some real knowledgeable people on this forum so I don;t see any real unsoleable problems. Good luck with you endever Anders!

Many thanks...

I'm not overly concerned about bittorent download speed and stuff like that. More to be able to stream media from;
* MyBookLive (NAS)
* Various web sites (online TV)

But also that I can use my Android phone and from the phone stream to the TV (through the mini-pc). I assume this is very straight forward as long as I use local media on the phone. But I'm also really interested to be able to 'mirror" my phones screen onto the TV (for example running a powerpoint presentation on the TV screen). Is there anyone out there that has any experience with that..? (I understand the Samsung AllShare Cast dongle can do this /assuming you use Samsung phones/ but I assume it must be possible, with some app or something, to do the same to a "mini-PC...?)

Any comments on models that have separate "Audio Out" ports...? What about models with bluetooth where the bluetooth can also be used for receiving streaming music..? (I.e. pair as "external speaker" from any device with bluetooth...)
