Ok got it sorted by plugging in into a 1080p monitor and changing the mode to 720p and it worked fine again. I then could change it up to 1080i when using the 1080i TV and it works fine.

Also wanted to mention that the following day the manufacturers who I had also contacted with this support request explained why and how to get around the issue without using a 1080p monitor. I have included their response below...

The Toffee Apple comes set with standard output of 1080p @ 60 Hz if you want to change that you would have to plug it into a 1080p capable TV and change the settings to 720p before you plug it into your older TV. Unfortunately the Toffee Apple doesn’t support auto detect at this stage and a factory reset won’t help as the factory output is 1080p. However you can change the settings without being able to see the screen, please try the following

Attach USB or wireless USB keyboard to the Toffee Apple and boot it up on your 1080i TV after you see the Android Media Solutions and Android boot images on screen (your screen will then go black or blue or say resolution not supported etc.) hit F9 on your keyboard then hit the down key 20 times then up key 11 times then hit Enter. Then hit right arrow key once then hit down arrow key 20 times hit enter key. Then hit right arrow key once then hit up arrow key 20 times then hit down arrow key 4 times hit enter.

This should now change your resolution to 720p, if it doesn’t work just reset and try again.
